Cultural Diversity and Global Awareness

Study Abroad-Australia

In May 2016 I had the amazing opportunity to be apart of the Ag-Bio study abroad trip to Australia. While in Australia we learned not only about Australian culture, but the about Australian agriculture. This trip opened my eyes to learning more about different cultures and to be more accepting of new things. Its important to learn and explore more about others cultures to be more accepting of all individuals.Learning about other cultures I believe is a big part of leadership. A leader should accept all individuals regardless of age, race, or cultural background. I think it’s important to keep an open mind and to continue to grow your knowledge of others.During my time in Australia I learned that to have the best experience you need to have an open mind. Sometimes you need to be exposed to more than your culture to understand how the world truly works. This trip ignited my passion for learning more about new cultures and places. I look forward to the many adventures to come.

New Student Orientation

As an orientation leader we have to work with a diverse group of students. This can have its challenges, but many rewards. I was given the opportunity to learn more about so many different cultures, which helped me in many ways. First it helped my students to feel comfortable with me. It also helped me to grow in my own knowledge of different cultures and backgrounds. I was able to be a leader to these students during a time that they needed somebody. Moving to a new school can be scary regardless of where you're coming from and knowing you have a friend can be a big comfort. My love of cultures and leaning new things enhanced my experience as an orientation leader and solidified why I decided to be an OL (orientation Leader). I was given the opportunity to work with amazing NSO (New Student Orientation) team. I also was given the opportunity to work with so many spectacular students. They not only grew themselves, but helped me to grown in more ways than one. I believe NSO helped me to become a more culturally educated person. Through my experience I was able to gain a lot of cultural insight. I was able to ask students questions about their culture to learn more about them. This helped me to bond with the students I was leading which made NSO such a spectacular experience. Learning how to communicate with other of a different culture or background is something I will use for the rest of my life and that will be an asset for years to come.
